How a better CH-47 blanket system serves the warfighter.

The number of ways the Improved Thermal Acoustic Blanket (ITAB) serves warfighters is surprisingly high. Of course, it offers improved thermal and acoustic conditions inside the aircraft, but that’s just for starters.  In addition, the ITAB:

  • Virtually eliminates the corrosion problems caused by the old blankets that trapped moisture. The ITAB features technical textiles that allow moisture vapor to escape, thereby increasing readiness, decreasing Non-Available Days, and reducing maintenance man-hours.

  • Reduces weight by 140+ pounds because it’s both hydrophobic and oleophobic, which means it doesn’t absorb liquids, oils, lubricants, etc., that not only soil the old blankets but make them heavier over time.

  • Achieves weight-savings that have a direct impact on missions by allowing for additional cargo, or increased range, etc. For example, 100 lbs. of JP8 equals 2.5 miles of tactical movement, or 5,000 more rounds of ammunition (5.56 mm).

What is a pound to a warfighter?

1lb = 32 rounds of 5.56mm

6lb = Body Armor Plate

100lbs of JP8 = 2.5 miles of tactical movement

In other words, the ITAB not only improves readiness and decreases maintenance costs, it improves performance and mission capability. Not bad for a piece of equipment that isn’t normally thought of as having much impact on the warfighter.
