It's not just a cover, it's the solution to 6 problems
It’s important to know that simply draping something over a piece of equipment does not ensure it’s being protected. In fact, some covers do more harm than good. But thanks to new technologies and technical textiles, advanced protective covers aren’t just window-dressing, they solve a number of problems:
1. Corrosion
Cocoon’s patented covers feature highly air-permeable materials, which means moisture can escape from under the cover as a vapor. This is the best protection against corrosion because covers that aren’t air-permeable trap that moisture and it increases Time of Wetness.
2. Leaking
Turrets and aircraft canopies are notorious for leaking, but an advanced cover is not only completely waterproof, it’s engineered to provide runoff and drainage. It’s important that a cover’s form and fit are as advanced as its materials. Even a waterproof cover will allow leakage if it hasn’t been properly designed.
3. UV Damage
When equipment, vehicles, aircraft, sit outside uncovered, UV rays damage coatings, ballistic glass, rubber seals, and more. Cocoon covers meet the ASTM G154 UV durability standard which is 100% exposure to solar/UV radiation in desert-like conditions for a minimum of 24 months.
4. Heat Build-Up
When heat builds up in a vehicle or an aircraft, it’s more than just uncomfortable and fatiguing for personnel. Heat causes problems with electronics and sensitive instruments, and fatigues metals, ballistic glass, gaskets, etc. A cover greatly reduces heat build up which, in turn, reduces fatigue for both assets and personnel.
5. Sand & Dust Intrusion
Cocoon covers filter out anything over 0.3 microns (as reference, a dust particle is 2.5 microns) which means they keep out even fine sand which can scratch and wear-down glass and coatings, foul lubricants, etc. They also filter out particulates in pollutants which can be catalysts for corrosion.
6. Static Build-up
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a highly important property when dealing with munitions and sensitive electronics. Cocoon covers use an embedded carbon ESD print which not only prevents static buildup but won’t wear off like ESD treatments that are applied to the surface of covers.
When you consider the various properties and features of these covers, you understand why they are effectively advanced technology in the form of textiles - technology that increases readiness, decreases maintenance costs, and extends useful life.
