Cocoon on schedule to deliver 3 new SAPF buildings inside of 3 years.

As our team puts the finishing touches on one SAPF hangar at Edwards AFB, we’re about to finish enclosing a second hangar and turn it over to the crew doing the SAPF compliance work. Meanwhile, installation of a third SAPF building will begin in early 2025.

The first hangar is a 194-foot clear span structure that will have taken less than 18 months to become operational (about 12 months of which was spent meeting SAPF requirements). The second hangar is a 245-foot clear span structure that will follow a similar schedule. Both hangars are full-metal structures manufactured off-site and installed in-place to maximize the speed of installation and minimize disruption on base.

The third structure, while not a hangar, will also be a SAPF facility. It too will be fully metal and fabricated off-site. All three structures are building code compliant and engineered to comply with the requirements of the highest seismic load in the U.S. They all feature steel frames that are hot-dip galvanized post-production, making them almost impervious to corrosion.

These buildings are testament to the advantages of adaptive structures that can be operational in a fraction of the time required for traditional construction. In addition they are far less costly in terms of both construction and sustainment, while offering the added advantage of being relocatable.
