Block II Chinook upgrades to include Cocoon’s Improved Thermal Acoustic Blanket (ITAB)
At the end of last month a Cocoon team was on-site at Boeing in Philadelphia, with our customer the U.S. Army, to verify installation of the first ITAB on Block II Chinooks. The Army chose to include Cocoon’s patented blanket system as part of the Block II modernization program because it improves readiness and reduces maintenance costs by mitigating corrosion. It’s also 140 lbs. lighter per aircraft than the legacy blanket (after use), which improves performance and mission capability. Other key features include:
A 40% improvement in acoustic performance (compared the legacy blanket)
Oleophobic and hydrophobic materials that repel water, oils, lubricants, and fuels (eliminating absorption that fouls blankets and adds weight)
An improved attachment system (eliminating the need for 550 cord)
An embedded carbon ESD print that makes them inherently anti-static (safe for use with munitions and sensitive electronics)
In many ways the ITAB hasn’t just modernized aviation blankets, it’s revolutionized them - which makes it fitting (so to speak) that they be installed on Block II.
The Cocoon ITAB is also available for MY II Chinooks – in fact, it’s currently flying on more than 80 aircraft (soon to be over 100). That means you don’t have to wait for Block II to reap the benefits of a better blanket system.
