Covers
The Science

Cocoon has developed a unique fabric with a highly breathable membrane at its inner layer. This core allows moisture to escape more rapidly than common alternatives, preventing what is commonly referred to as the “greenhouse effect.”

Custom fit for each vehicle or weapon system, Cocoon covers are superior at protecting equipment from the elements and other outside contaminants, resulting in reduced corrosion and related maintenance costs as well as improved crew safety and equipment readiness.

Comparative Testing

In order to ensure that the Cocoon Cover System is the best product available for protecting high value assets and weapons systems, extensive laboratory tests were conducted. Cocoon’s fabric was compared to vinyl reinforced polyester fabric (commercial brand Herculite®), acrylic canvas fabric (commercial brand Sunbrella®), and polyethylene shrink wrap, all commonly used to protect equipment.

First, the labs calculated the time it takes for a 1% change in relative humidity to equilibrate between the inside and the outside of each cover fabric – that is to say, if humidity is 1% higher inside the cover than outside the cover, how long will it take for that extra 1% to escape.

Cocoon Covers demonstrate significantly higher “breathability” than covers using other comparab le materials.

Cocoon covers are highly efficient at equilibrating relative humidity and allowing moisture to escape out from under the cover:

  • Respond 144 times faster than marine canvas
  • Respond 218 times faster than polyethylene shrink wrap
  • Respond 600 times faster than coated fabric covers
*Based on data collected using remote sensing temperature and relative humidity recorders during one week of exposure.

Next, in a controlled laboratory test, ten replicated sets of sand-blasted, rust-free iron pipe fittings were wrapped in traditional protective cover materials and in the Cocoon fabric membrane. They were then exposed to an outdoor environment for one week, unwrapped, examined and photographed.

The fittings wrapped in the Cocoon fabric showed no signs of visible rust while ALL others showed varying degrees of visible rust and corrosion.

Additional controlled testing using metal coupons over a two week exposure period, clearly revealed similar corrosion resistance, with air and moisture impermeable materials demonstrating the worst corrosion development. A final test consisting of direct exposure of material to seawater with metal coupons resting above confirmed superior performance.

Despite all this testing, we recognize that it is real-life proof from use in the field that matters most. While we continue to make enhancements to solve new and complex challenges and mission requirements that are presented over time, our covers have been used successfully for more than 18 months in the Iraq and Afghanistan theater, yielding superior results.
